In order to use VPN, a VPN client must be installed on a computer outside of the Corporate network want to connect to. You could install the VPN client on a personal computer you own, or on a computer that the company owns, as long as it is outside of the Corporate network. Regarding setting up a private VPN of your own, this would mean you could access any of your computers you own while travelling. So yes, VPN can be used for any type of computer.

To obtain a VPN, one must contact an IT Department for free or a low cost. Or other companies can give you one for around $15 or so a month and generally speaking, the bigger the VPN, the better it will be. It can also provide anonymous web browsing as an additive.
VPN's with SSL, this is a relatively new thing. I could be wrong but I think it may have only being introduced (to Microsoft products anyway) with server 2008. The whole idea is that alot of public WAP's, such as hotels, cafes, pubs etc don't have the right ports open to allow pptp traffic. If this is the case you have to do without your vpn or start asking for the admin to configure the router. So now with VPN with SSL eliminates all these problems and hopefully guarantees you your VPN anywhere you go.

On the client side, you must set the VPN type to IKEv2 or it won't work.
