However, it had not been allowed in the Catholic Church for several hundred years by the time of the Reformation (which began around 1517). A period of reforms in the eleventh and twelfth centuries provoked changes in canon law that forbade priests to marry. Most of these changes took place during the First and Second Lateran Councils (1123 and 1139, respectively).
