The historic record on sugar suggests that the English did not make sugar during the middle ages. Sugar cane would not have grown there. Beets were not used for sugar until after the middle ages. The production of sugar from tree sap was unknown until learned from natives in North America. And there seems to be no record of sugar from grain or fruit. Certainly, the English had honey.
