Royal titles were passed down through the eldest legitimate son; the King's immediate family were considered royal but distant relatives were not. It is likely that most people of European descent have at least one royal ancestor, but this does not make them royal.

Kings frequently had several children, both legitimate and illegitimate - as generations passed the younger or illegitimate children of younger or illegitimate children of younger or illegitimate children (and so on) lost connection with the royal line, they did not inherit titles and ceased to be considered as nobility. These descendants would marry into the middle classes and their descendants could well marry into the working or peasant classes.
