The Sea by James Reeves is basically a long metaphor, and he uses many onomatopoeias in his writing to make the connection between the sea and a dog. The poem has occasional rhymes but no rhythm.

Similes are used in like or as. They compare something.

For Ex.

Like - He fights like a lion.

As- He was as tough as a bull.

Jus look for the like or as . and see if its comparing. If it is, you have found your simile.

Why didn't James Reeves didn't compare the sea to a well fed dog?

It wouldn't have the same effect. By comparing the sea to a hungry dog, Reeves employed a sense of fear and desperation in the reader. The 'hungry dog' metaphor also allows the reader to compare the waves of the sea to 'eating' the coast. Techniquically, the subject matter of the poem is a storm at sea, therefore wouldn't fit the metaphor of a well-fed dog.
