Could you load a ROM to an N64 cartridge and run it on your N64 and if so how?

No. The N64 carts contain read-only memory, that is, they were programmed during manufacturing and cannot be changed. There is no way to "load" a ROM onto a normal N64 cartridge.
You would need to buy a custom flash cart made specifically for the N64, which is quite expensive online.

If you have an Everdrive 64, then yes. The Everdrive is a cartridge that lets you put an SD card loaded with roms into it, and plays them on a real N64. it's currently 100 dollars, but it may be worth it to you.

I wish I could tell you, it happened to me yesterday :( I don't think there is a way around it because you need to be able to load the save game from the 'cartridge' and because there is none, you can't load it back up again. Totally sucks.
