It's called a cap for a tooth.
It is probably a cavity, but it could be that you just hit it really hard on something. My brother's tooth turned gray because he ran into a pole. :)
Tooth decay is the process that results in a cavity (dental caries). It occurs when bacteria in your mouth make acids that eat away at a tooth. If not treated, tooth decay can cause pain, infection, and tooth loss. The mixture of bacteria and acids make a sticky substance called plaque which if not treated, can cause your tooth to rot or turn into a yellowish colour.
I'm no dentist but in these type of circumstances i would seriously consider a dentist to answer this one but the cavity can turn into gingivitis. My sister had a cavity on her tooth, of course she was only 9 so she would lose it. Your teeth or tooth may hurt but you did it to yourself. if you really need to get rid of it then seriously consider brushing you teeth more, less sugary food, and no more fats. I HOPE THIS HELPS :) P.S. I'm only 11 :) very smart
Go to the dentist obviously. To know specifically what it is, more information is needed but here are some possibilities: could be a cavity occurring somewhere along the back tooth which will require a dentist to fix through cleaning, drilling and filling. Or maybe if you are around your pre or early 20s, then it may be a sign of some impact among teeth caused by the development of the wisdom tooth which in turn causes some pain. Again, a dentist needed to confirm that.
Not sure what you mean by damaged tooth. But a tooth that no longer has a nerve root will turn gray if not filled or capped. it can take from months to years depending on many factors, but it will turn if not treated properly.
