After the full moon, the moon wanes (gets smaller) through the waning gibbous phase, to the last quarter moon, the waning crescent, and finally the new moon.
a waning crescent is a phase of the moon where the visible part of sunlight side of the moon is a crescent that gets smaller every night until new moon (when you can't see anything).
The moon is said to be waning, when the lighted part gets smaller. When it gets larger, the moon is waxing.
The moon reflects the light from the sun. The reason the moon has different shapes in its orbit is around the earth. Imagine the earth at the center of a clock. The sun is in the far distance at 9:00. When the moon is at 3:00, the moon appears full. The moon orbits the earth in a counter clockwise direction as viewed from above the North Pole. As the moon moves towards 12:00, it gets smaller and smaller because of the angle at which the moon is viewed from the earth. When the moon gets to 9:00 it becomes a new moon because the sun is behind the moon (relatively speaking). A crescent moon would be how we view the moon when it is between 12:00 and 6:00.
The crescent moon gets skinnier and skinnier every morning until it disappears.
When the moon looks like a crescent, it is either a waxing crescent or waning crescent moon.
When the term wane is used for the moon, it relates to the moon's phases. There are eight phases, the new moon, the full moon, 1st quarter, 3rd quarter, waning gibbous, waning crescent, waxing gibbous and waxing crescent. In your case, a wane moon means that it is getting smaller. A waxing moon or crescent means that it is getting bigger.
We see more of the moon lit when it is a gibbous moon than when it is a crescent moon, so it does seem bigger. Save
When the moon appears to grow smaller, we say it "wanes". Conversely, when it gets bigger, we say it "waxes".
A crescent moon is one of the phases of the Moon. Like it's name, it looks like a crescent. In one lunar phase [See related Link - Crescent Moon] you will see two crescents. One just after the Moon comes out of the Earths shadow (New Moon), and one just before the Moon disappears into the Earths shadow. See related Link - Phases of the Moon for a pictorial representation.
The apparent change in the sunlit portion of the moon through the month is called waxing (getting larger, from crescent through full) or waning (getting smaller, from full down to crescent).
