The Battle of Antietam was fought in Maryland on September 17, 1862. After the battle, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all the slaves living in the Confederacy. This act dissuaded foreign states such as France and England, from coming to the aid of the Confederacy. Both countries had banned slavery and there were unwilling to ally with the Confederacy once the Union had tied their cause to the destruction of slavery.

The US Civil War Battle of Antietam was a raid by Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia. Lee's raid into Maryland had several purposes. One important military purpose was to have Le's movement in the Eastern Virginia, coincide with a Confederate march into Kentucky. The two pronged operation was designed to deliver a substantial set of defeats. Defending their own territory would end any Nortern threats to Southern territoryThe offensives were also designed to recruit as many of Border State troops as possible. The most important purpose, was however, resting with Lee's offensive.Following the Union's bitter defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run, Lee's raid into Maryland, if successful, would have a demoralizing effect in the Union. Back to back defeats of the Army of the Potomac would have been serious. If Lee was able to remain in Maryland, he would also exert military and political pressure on Washington DC. It would have also endangered the port city of Baltimore.Generals Bragg, Lee and Confederate President Jefferson Davis had plotted this pair of offensives in the Spring of 1862. The last piece of this Fall offensive really hinged upon a major blow against the Union in Maryland. The idea was that a Lee victory would give the pro-Confederate leaders in London the opportunity to seek to remedy the conflict by brokering a "peace settlement". This would, of course, be a peace that ensured the recognition of the Confederate States of America. France would be expected to endorse the peace. As a formally recognized nation, it would gain it access to the European banking systems and make loans available. It would end the war with the Union and the revolution would succeed. It would have been premature in 1862 to imagine that the South would obtain any military support. On September 17, 1862, the North's Army of the Potomac attacked the South's Army of Northern Virginia. The battle was the worst one day disaster in American military history then and to current times. 27,000 casualties were created in a single day.Technically, the battle was a draw. Especially when the large Union troop advantage failed to win a decisive victory.A victory, not a military draw was Lee's goal. Now he no choice but to retreat to Virginia. Two elements then followed to the benefit of the North:1. No formal recognition by France or Great Britain could be expected; and2. President Lincoln was looking for a battle victory that would enhance his "first proclamation emancipation". Antietam enabled Lincoln to do this.
Stapping it; ice would only make it numb and you'd move it, forgetting that you'd hurt it.
