What would cause a male in his 40s to suddenly be afraid of heights to the point of paralyzing fear?

All it would take would be a trigger of some kind causing a frightening feeling eg a panic attack, then a fear of that feeling repeating itself, evenutally becoming a terrifying feeling increasing into intense terror which then becomes an obsessive cycle of fear- adrenalin- fear which is extremely frightening to those who do not understand what is happening to them. Don't be afraid of a feeling as its just a burst of adrenalin at a stressful time is the way out of this nightmare, easier said that done but it can be done and will cure the symptoms.
