A group is a vertical column on the Periodic Table. The elements in a group have very similar chemical properties because their outer electron configuration is the same.

Ex: the first column on the left, Li, Na, K etc. Each of these has one outer electron, causing each to react in very similar ways. They lose that electron and form a positive ion.
