Definition of Inorganic Chemistry?
Inorganic chemistry is the type of chemistry that focuses mainly on substances that DON'T contain H-C bonds, like CO2, H2O, HNO3 etc. Inorganic compounds are usually formed without the help of living organisms.
An inorganic substance originally meant something which was not derived from living things. However this is not the modern definition. Today we refer to organic chemistry as the chemistry of carbon compounds, (with the exception of simple ones like oxides and carbonates). All the rest of chemistry is inorganic. Thus methane, proteins, sugar and alcohol are organic, and salt, copper sulfate and iron oxide are inorganic.
Organic chemistry involves the study of chemistry as it relates to living things; organic chemistry is a chemistry of carbon containing chemicals. Inorganic chemistry involves the study of chemistry as it relates to inorganic compounds (by tradition several compounds containing carbon are also studied in inorganic chemistry).
