For general purposes a child is usually described as a person between birth and puberty; in many places puberty is considered, for purposes of definition, to be about thirteen or fourteen years of age. Stricter definitions of a child vary, though, depending on circumstances and area. Legislation differs worldwide on what age defines a child and different legislation - criminal law, and workplace law, for example - within the same country can specify different ages. If you can describe the circumstances in which the term 'child' needs to be defined, and the geographical area in which these circumstances arise, a more specific answer will be possible.
