One situation is the movement of light through water. If you are ever in a pool, you may notice the different light patterns, or in the ocean, waves of light split up into their capability of reaching the bottom. Also, light diffracts during rainfall (rainbows).
White light is dispersed to its component colours by a diffraction grating. Therefore a diffraction grating acts like a prism and is used for any application where a single colour of light is needed e.g. spectrophotometer.

Where d is the distance between each grating. Sine theta is the angle at which the light is diffracted away, n is the order number and the wavelength is the wavelength of the light.

Sin(theta) = (1 X 590x10^-9)/1.67x10^-6
Sin^-1((1 X 590x10^-9)/1.67x10^-6) = 45 degrees
When a wave diffracts the direction of the wave changes as it bends around the obstacle. The frequency, wavelength and speed of the wave DO NOT CHANGE.
