Polymers are the result of carbon-based covalent molecules forming long chains. The word should by now be unsurprising. Poly meaning many and mer, as in isomer, is a unit, thus many units. The formation of polymers (polymerisation) is the subject of the following types of reactions.

Polymers form by the combining of a large number of "monomer units". This can occur in two major ways, by addition polymerization or condensation polymerization.

Addition polymerization deals with monomers of the same type of functional group with at least one double or triple bond. Condensation is for monomers that are differing with at least two separate functional groups.

In both addition and condensation polymers, smaller (usually) organic monomers combine to form a larger molecule. In both cases the polymer formed has different properties than the starting monomers.
