When people are shown doing certain things because of age, race, religion, disability, and other factors this keeps the stereotype active. Jokes and other items also contribute to this as well as references to people in discriminatory ways. The stereotype is reinforced when numbers of people repeat the false impressions or retell jokes about other people. Names of teams and products also add to the reinforcement of stereotypes making it possible for people to use them.

It's partly due to everybody wanting to be special. They come up with reasons why they're better than somebody else. This sometimes separates people into groups with similar (often untrue) stereotypical characteristics. This is where the 'geeks', 'jocks', and 'goths' come from. Sometimes people want to be seen this way, but most of the time not.

Also, people in school haven't had as much experience in the world as older people and have made their mind up (in a rather simple way) about how the world works.

Part of it can also be blamed on the media and how they portray what is popular and 'cool'. "You don't want to be like the others, you want to be different, and these shoes will make you different." Making other people seem the same makes you seem different. The majority of people in school haven't even really discovered their true identities yet, either.

Most teens think that they're the center of the universe, and when you put many of them in the same building, they'll think up stereotypes that help them to seem better. They perpetuate it themselves.
