The blocks were carved from cliffs and mines, then dragged to (yes, dragged, by sheer manpower) and shipped across the Nile to the building site. As each layer was built up, an earthen ramp was built up with it so the blocks could be dragged up to the next layer until they got to the top. Then they went back down adding limestone blocks to smooth out the pyramid's exterior, removing the earth ramp until they were at ground level again.
The Egyptians used ramps t Carry Stone blocks up, and bold on to on each other.
They built mounds on the sides of the pyramids as they went up and up and remove them when they were done.-Egyptians pulled limestone on wooden sleds to make up the pyramids.
Over the centuries when ancient Egypt was a major empire ruled by royal families, some major pyramids were built as burial places for the most powerful rulers called Pharaohs. Certain facts about how the pyramids were built are well known. ( The large pyramids are part of the seven wonders of the ancient world that have survived). The labor needed to build the pyramids came from the forced labor of the Pharaoh's subjects. The workers had other duties to do during harvest times and or war times, thus the work was in a sense "seasonal".
The length of time to build them meant that over the time of construction, tens of thousand of the pharaoh's citizens and slaves were required.
The major material for the construction of the pyramids were for the most part limestone blocks (the blocks used to build the great Giza pyramid weighed on average of 2.5 tons (2,545kg)), quarried as close to the pyramid site as possible. The blocks were most likely loaded onto sledges and hauled to the construction site by gangs of slaves along specially prepared causeways. Granite blocks was also used for lining the internal passageways and burial chambers. These were brought from quarries at modern day Aswan. These giant blocks were placed on sledges and floated down the Nile on giant rafts made from papyrus reeds.
To give the reader some sense of the size of these burial monuments, the large pyramid at Giza built for the pharaoh Cheops was about 480 feet (141m) high and covered about 13 acres (5.3 Hectares) of ground. The engineering task of moving these large stones into place can only be surmised. The engineers left no clues either in blueprints or hieroglyphics carved in stone on the details of the pyramids' construction. Clearly some type of ramp (or ramps) were required to bring the stones to such high levels. Also the pyramids were covered with fine grained white limestone from El Tura to make a beautiful finishing touch. The whole structure was capped with a pyramidal granite block, often sheathed in gold, called a pyramidion.
The modern day examination of the surviving pyramids has experts puzzled. This is because the civil engineering and materials engineering required to produce a construction so mathematically perfect seems beyond the scope of engineering skills and technology available as far back in time as approximately 2500 BC.
The pharaoh's actual tomb within the pyramid held treasures he would need in his after life. These treasures were heavy with gold and silver. Thus to try to avoid looting of these treasures long after the pyramids were built contained false passageways and stone portcullises in an effort to fool looters. In the larger pyramids this proved to be impossible. The tombs were eventually looted and even the Tura limestone coverings were broken and torn away for other uses after the pharaoh era ended.
The pharaoh would decide he wanted a pyramid. One of the men who worked for him would get craftsmen, painters, and labourers together and pay them to build the pyramid.
