Earth's atmosphere is comprised of layers of gases that are retained by the earth's gravity.
There are 5 main layers:
exosphere - outermost layer
stratosphere thermosphere mesosphere
troposphere - begins at earth's surface and extends to between 7 km of the earth's poles at the equator with some variation due to weather.
There are layers within these layers:
ozone - within the stratosphere
ionosphere - ionized by solar radiation
homosphere and heterosphere - determined by whether or not the gases are well mixed (not that there's anything wrong with that
Planetary boundary layer - part of the troposphere nearest the earth's surface
