She was human to the waist, but below that were biting snapping dogs. She had become a monster. She sat on the Italian side of the straits of Messina gobbling up anything that came within her reach. In The Odyssey, Odysseus manages to avoid Charybdis (see above), but loses six men to Scylla. Scylla probably explained a partially submerged rock that ships foundered on.
