The fighting in the Pacific theter in WWII was firce even though the Japanese were broken. Thousnds of troops meet their deaths on both sides as marines and army personnel threw themselves at tough, dug in Japanese positions manned by Japanese troops who knew they would die. The biggest change was that the Japanese allowed the Americans to land a few waves and the launched a massive artillery, mortar, machine and rifle gun fire at the Americans as they strated unloading their supplies. This proved to be very deadly.
