Rhetoric used in this way is, the study of the effective use of language. Any group trying to make their position known, and gain support in that position is going to do well to study the effective use of language. However, most humanists don't like using the word rhetoric to describe themselves because of the better known definition, the undue use of exaggeration or display. Humanists try to disprove rhetoric (by this definition) which is often used by certain groups of people of any religion to make their belief system seem sound, when all their claims have no real basis outside their holy book.

What does the phrase 'on the rhetorical battlefield' mean?

It sounds to me like a description of 2 or more people having a debate, argument or lively discussion that is weak in substance, but that is full of inflated language. Excellent speakers can use rhetoric skillfully to persuade listeners that their position is correct. But it has to be used sparingly and with logical and intelligent substance underlying the argument. Some people are so good at "rhetoric" that the rhetoric itself becomes a battle of wits, or a battle of words. The substance of the argument goes out the window, along with logic and clear thought. It's difficult to describe rhetoric in a few words, but you might find links below as they are found.

Humanists found in monasteries a wealth of classical texts and manuscripts that had been preserved by monks. These texts, often related to philosophy, literature, and science, provided a foundation for the revival of classical learning during the Renaissance. Monasteries also served as centers of education and scholarship, allowing humanists to study and promote the values of humanism, such as critical thinking and the exploration of human potential. Additionally, the monastic libraries offered rich resources for the development of a more secular and human-centered worldview.
