If you are good at it, you will get an initial job as an assistant to an experienced engineer who is solving problems in the design of new equipment, or fixing problems with previous designs. As you get more experience and show aptitude for the tasks you will get promoted to principal engineer, project manager, then departmental manager. If you are an idle parasite (Wally in Dilbert.) you will remain at the bottom of the heap 'till you retire or get fired.
