Stuttering originates from the diagnosis by a parent that something is wrong with a child's normal nonfluency (Johnson, 1942)

In time, the child learns to avoid normal nonfluency, and in so doing interferes with own speech, resulting in stuttering. In other words, stuttering behaviors manifest as what one does to avoid stuttering.
