Not as is commonly thought a billion images, the compound eye actually puts together all the images. They actually see in a mix of real time and slow motion. What they cannot see or detect is slow moving objects. How many times have you tried to swat a stationary fly only for it to be gone before the impact? try going in very very slowly and your success rate will rise! seriously they are not psychic!
There was a study done and it beats me how they did it but they managed to fuse some sort of microchip to the optical centre of the fly's brain and translate the data into a viewable image. I'm searching for it now as i type this, but this question came up on the Google search.
