North Korea & Communist China. Also the Soviet Union had some of their pilots secretly involved in the fighting. It was not just the US that fought to save South Korea. Other UN nations sent troops to fight alongside the US.

The South had the advantage of having European powers behind it, backing it up. While it's true that communist China and the Soviet Union were supporting North Korea with modern weaponry and supplies, the South was able to have military superiority, only being pushed back by extremely large numbers of Chinese infantry storming into Korea to save the North. During the war, the South practically had total domination in naval and aerial warfare.
In the beginning of the Civil War the North was fighting to join the South back into the Union. While to the South the war was about defense, to protect their new country Confederate States of America(C.S.A). By the end of the war the North was fighting against the 'Peculiar Institution in other words slavery, while the South was fighting to save it.
