American soldiers were partially trained in the Vietnam language before they left to fight, but most certainly did use a language dictionary while there. It didn't take them long to pick up some of the language fast because it kept them alive.

they stay home or sometimes they had to fight back their enemies( could be Americans soldiers, or could be N/S Vietnamese)in Vietnam the wives usually stay home and cook ( can not eat first) and wait for their husbands home and they would prepare dinner or whatever for their husbands( if you watch Japanese or Chinese movies you will know) I'm Vietnamese
