Land features, expecially the size of the Great Lakes, are generally formed by natural processes. In the case of the great lakes, they were formed by huge glaciers moving southward. Each lake represents where a glacier stopped moving. When the glacier melted away, there was a deep and wide hole left where its immense weight had carved into the Earth, and the melt water filled the hole.
The Great Lakes have contributed to the development of both the US and Canada by probably being the port that has given us the supplies we need to make the US and Canada.

The two countries that share the Great Lakes are Canada and USA
None of the five Great Lakes is entirely within Canada. Canada shares four of the five Great Lakes with the US. Lake Michigan is entirely within the US. Hydrologically, however, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan are one lake, which has two large lobes. As such, there are really only four Great Lakes, and all four are shared between Canada and the US.
