Most clergymen do not like to use "spill" because it denotes an accident and they say that Jesus did not accidently spill his blood, but rather that his blood flowed from his wounds.

In the old testament the atonement for sin was made by spilling the blood of a lamb. The passover, which is also an illustration of salvation through Jesus Christ, involved blood. Jesus became God in the flesh, the sinless unblemished Lamb who was slain and paid the penalty for all who believe and trust in His shed blood for the forgiveness of sin.
