Columbus made four voyages to America, not just one, over a ten-year period from 1492-1502. But yes, he returned from them all successfully, eventually dying of what is now believed to be Reiter's Syndrome in the Spanish town of Vallidolid in 1506. His remains lay buried there until the French takeover of Hispaniola in 1795, when for some reason they were transferred there, but then returned to Spain in 1898 where they now lie buried in an elaborate tomb in Seville Cathedral.
Columbus was not the first person to discover America- the Viking explorer Leif Erikson landed there in the 11th Century, and there is also some evidence that it was first of all discovered by the Welsh, under an expedition led by Prince Madoc, who befriended the Mandan Indian tribe and led to the Welsh language being spoken amongst some native Americans up until the mid-19th Century. However, both English and American historians are keen to gloss over this due to a mutual dislike of the Welsh nation.
