Yes he is responsible for a small amount of what ended up being a complete wipe out of the TaÃno people, but almost all of the killing that went on was done by his men who, even though he tried very hard too, could not keep under control. From the very beginning of his discovery, Columbus stressed to his men that they must retain peace with the Indians so that they could convert them, seems that was as, if not more important to him than finding gold. Unfortunately he could not control his men who stole from the Indians, and raped and killed them at almost every chance. Columbus' real fault was that he failed to control his men from doing these heinous acts.
[Even though the above is rated a "best answer," I can find absolutely no corroboration of this statement of the "facts" relating to Columbus and his troops. The truth has never been taught in modern American classrooms, and so it's necessary to find out on our own. However, as numerous sources would tell us, what happened in 1492 was deeply overshadowed by what happened starting in his return trip in 1493. "He promptly instituted policies of slavery and systematic extermination against the native Taino population. Columbus's programs reduced Taino numbers from as many as eight million at the outset of his regime to about three million in 1496. Perhaps 100,000 were left by the time of the governor's departure (in 1500). It seems there is abundant evidence that he did kill native "Americans," and founded the school of thought which would continue to be applied in the further "settling" of the North American continent for the next several centuries.]
This is not true what he is saying

because he enslaved native Indians and made them work for him, he sent the natives over to Spain to work for them he murdered them all basically and he wiped out a whole population and culture and that's the sum of it with more details though. He was a very bad man. oh and he forced them all to go into Christianity through a oath that they didn't understand and then they got punished for it and the work was under bad conditions and they were put in the cargo hold as in for property not human beings and the beat, tortured, or killed the natives if they couldn't keep up with the work
