No. This rumor has never been substantiated. I have read posts where people claim that she was arrested not once, but as many as three times. Yet, never have the posters provided a reputable link to support this claim. If this were in fact true, I would imagine the media would have ran with it, thus making the story easy to validate.

Did Candy Lightner the founder of MADD get a DUI?

There is no evidence that Candy Lightner has ever received a DWI or DUI. However, she has disagreed with the neo-prohibition orientation that has become prominent in Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Candy Lightner left MADD and is concerned that the organization that she herself created is changing its focus. "It has become far more neo-prohibitionist than I ever wanted or envisioned," she says. "I didn't start MADD to deal with alcohol. I started MADD to deal with the issue of drunk driving." Lightner emphasized the importance of distinguishing between drinking alcohol on one hand and drunk driving on the other.

What type of DUI facts can be found through MADD?

MADD contains a wide range of statistics on DUI's. As well as, articles about DUI's and charges that can be made for a DUI is issued. MADD also offers facts about DUI's and child endangerment.

Did candy lightner the founder of madd get sentenced to prison for DUI?

No Candy has not ever received ANY citation for DUI! While she is not a favorite person of mine, I do have great respect for her. I was friends with her survivng twin daughter for many years. There was always "breaking news" regarding both Candy and Serena. Once I was sleeping over and we were awoken to news that Serena had been killed by a drunk driver. She was sitting right beside me, alive and well. I will never understand why people have to throw stones at good people. With so many horrific things, true things going on, I have to wonder who is either that bored or that sad that they are fabricating stories. Does DUI-help exept volenteers?

"DUI-help can be interpreted as either a group that helps individuals in DUI situations take care of their legal issues, or conversely, it can also be interpreted as organizations that strive to help prevent DUI's, such as MADD. Per the first example, they usually won't take volunteers since you need to have an understanding of the law. Per the second example, these type of groups are primarily focused on volunteer work so most likely they would accept them."

Is Mothers Against Drunk Driving a book?

No MADD is an organization started by Candace Lightner, a mother whose 13 year old daughter was tragically rundown (hit and run) near her home in CA, by a man whose prior alcohol related offenses had resulted in a slap on the wrist. Cari Lightner was murdered by a driver out on bail for hit and run while DUI. She was walking on the sidewalk in their neighborhood - when the driver was later found and arrested, he was .20 BAL and had a string of priors involving driving under the influence. MADD was the first effort of it's kind to take a country by storm and has influenced the attitude of the world on alcohol and driving, in the 30 years since it's grassroots beginning. They are responsible for laws being changed and the 1983 Responsible Drinking Campaign by Anheuser-Busch. They are also the face behind Red Ribbon Week in our nations schools, putting the idea into our smallest citizens, not to drink and get behind the wheel. The National Restaurant Association (NRA), became MADD's partner in the 1997 "designated driver effort". By their 20 year anniversary MADD had orchestrated a 40% drop in alcohol related deaths on the HWY's across America. There are chapters in every state and they have moved their efforts into high schools in an attempt to prevent a problem before it starts.

Drunk Driving Statistics?

There are several statistics released by CDC.gov and MADD Online with regard to drunk driving, DUI, and DWI and at a glance it can be inferred that for the past decade, deaths relating to DUI and DWI has dramatically decreased. But it was not clear in the numbers what caused the decline considering that there might be technological advances on safety features of cars manufactured. Overall, the decline is quite a good news but it does not rule out that technology can really assure safety with people still drinking and driving.
