No MADD is an organization started by Candace Lightner, a mother whose 13 year old daughter was tragically rundown (hit and run) near her home in CA, by a man whose prior alcohol related offenses had resulted in a slap on the wrist. Cari Lightner was murdered by a driver out on bail for hit and run while DUI. She was walking on the sidewalk in their neighborhood - when the driver was later found and arrested, he was .20 BAL and had a string of priors involving driving under the influence.
MADD was the first effort of it's kind to take a country by storm and has influenced the attitude of the world on alcohol and driving, in the 30 years since it's grassroots beginning. They are responsible for laws being changed and the 1983 Responsible Drinking Campaign by Anheuser-Busch. They are also the face behind Red Ribbon Week in our nations schools, putting the idea into our smallest citizens, not to drink and get behind the wheel.
The National Restaurant Association (NRA), became MADD's partner in the 1997 "designated driver effort". By their 20 year anniversary MADD had orchestrated a 40% drop in alcohol related deaths on the HWY's across America. There are chapters in every state and they have moved their efforts into high schools in an attempt to prevent a problem before it starts.
