He made 4 trips landing on South and Central America on the last two. His first landing was on an island in the current Bahamas. He named it San Salvador. The exact island is not known but one has been chosen to carry the name.

So giving recognition to a man that didn't really discover would be unfair to the civilizations that actually did discover the new world.
