Forrest Gump is famous for several reasons in the movie:
* He won the Congressional Medal of Honor - Vietnam
* He won the Purple Heart - Vietnam
* He ran (literally) across the U.S. and back which made headlines
* His Shrimp Boat business, after the hurricane, made them (Forrest and Captain Dan) a lot of money especially when their boat was the only surviving one
* Dan invested in stocks (computer) which made them millions which furthered their Shrimping business as well
The Oscar for Best Director usually goes to the director of the Best Picture winner.
