In the Civil War, the French were pro-confederate because they were trying to gain influence in Mexico, and it would suit them to have a new nation that was pro-French, in between Mexico and the USA.

At the beginning of the war, they were ready to send military aid if the British did the same. But when Lee lost the Battle of Antietam, the British said they were not convinced of Confederate viability.

Following this unexpected Northern victory, Lincoln was in a strong enough position to change his original war-aims, and declared that he was now waging a war specifically against slavery. After that, neither the British or the French could be seen to intervene on the other side.
