George Burns (January 20, 1896 - March 9, 1996), born Nathan Birnbaum in New York City, attended Public School 22. He left after the 4th grade when his father died (1903). In order to support his 11 siblings, he shined shoes, ran errands, sold newspapers and at the age of 7 he was a syrup maker in a local candy shop.
Did he have an education? Maybe he didn't have a formal education, but he was a down-to-earth writer, a scholar of human behavior and was able to communicate on an "every man's" level of understanding.
