Washington was a volunteer at the time. He was very active in the battle afterwards, rallying the troops. Whether he could actually be considered to have taken command, as there were numerous British Officers that would have taken command rather than let some colonial take command.
In 1755 Washington re-entered the British army, as aide-de-camp to General Braddock, was promoted to colonel and became a regimental commander.
