Gandhi worked to eradicate untouchability and discrimination based on caste, but he did not completely abolish the caste system in India. The caste system is deeply ingrained in Indian society and continues to exist in various forms despite efforts to eliminate it. Gandhi's work did contribute to increased awareness and efforts toward social equality.
Nair is one of the caste in Kerala. All human are same. In that sense, you can not say one caste is forward or other is backward. If you see the caste system, Nairs are considered as Shudras who comes at the bottom in Hindu varna(color) system. First is Brahmins and then Kshathriyas(Mainly Verma) and then Vaishyas(Who does trace) and then Shudras who work for all the other three groups.

Thambiran is a forward caste. Since their nature of work was assosiated in the service of God in the temple. But when we look into the ecomonic possition of the people, it is better to be classified under backward to uplift them.
Caste system was not intentionally introduced by a specific group. It came into existence naturally similar to class system in modern world. Those who were teachers, scholars, priests were considered respectable by all and thus made into a higher caste, on the other side, the sweepers and cleaners, whose work was considered filthy and unworthy naturally formed a low caste group. It's time to eliminate caste from society. Few steps to eliminate caste system from society; 1. Ban the use of Surname at any level, as it allow grouping. 2. Ban on caste certificate; manage to provide benefits presently based on caste, to every India. This is the caste system which not allows developing a person and felt need of caste benefits. 3. Every Indian should be treated as invaluable assets with unique ID 4. Allow free education for all; improve education system, which help in eliminating caste system. 5. Eliminate corruption from society by the using Information Technology, it help to generate fund to implement above steps. As caste system have a deep root in society, it will take some time to eliminate from society, I am 100% sure these steps erase caste systems totally from society. It allow human mind able to work without any pressure, consequently contribute a lots in developing India.
hinduism has fostered a spirit of resistance to change and progress, and the caste system has resigned people to accept poverty rather than work to better their condition.
Britishers discriminate people on basis of colour, caste, creed, etc . They treated Indians as slaves. They forced people to work under them.
