Wikipedia speculates that this was not due to his scientific discoveries, but probably due to political concerns of an upcoming parliamentary election in 1705..

Answer

Isaac newton was certainly a renowned scientist and mathematician of his time and many of his theories have been the basis of those of modern times. Although there were controversies with other "inventors" of calculus, his contributions in optics, gravity, calculus and astronomy and other discoveries live on. Of particular interest was his application of the Scientific Method--where he carefully noted his experiments and their results so that they could be replicated. He was a member of the Royal Society and of Parliament, but was more active in his role as Master of the Mint.
