According to the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke), no apostle was with Jesus to witness his baptism, because he had not yet begun his mission and had not appointed apostles. In Mark and Matthew, it seems that only Jesus saw the Holy Spirit descend in the form of a dove and heard the voice of God. However, Luke's Gospel leaves open the possibility that others saw the dove and heard the voice of God, providing a potential source for the tradition, which was later recorded in the Gospels. John's Gospel does not mention the baptism, but says that John the Baptist told that he saw a dove settle on Jesus.

Jesus was baptised once, by John the Baptist, after which he was taken into the wilderness. Although he was only baptised once, the Transfiguration is a surprisingly similar event that mirrors the baptism and thereby emphasises the message of the baptism and the forty days in the wilderness.

Mark 1:9-11 tell of the baptism of Jesus and the voice of God from heaven. Mark 1:13 tells of Jesus taken into the wilderness for forty days, ministered by angels just as Elijah was ministered by an angel and in the wilderness forty days (1 Kings 19:5-7). Those familiar with the story of Elijah are likely to have assumed he fasted for the forty days (and indeed Matthew and Luke added this in copying from Mark), which brings into play another allusion, to Moses when (Exodus 34:28) he fasted for 40 days while he wrote the words of the Ten Commandments on tablets. Mark 9:2-13 tells of the Transfiguration, the voice of God once again from heaven, and Elijah and Moses actually appear to Jesus and are mentioned by his disciples. The Transfiguration events link back to the baptism events through a parallel structure in Mark's Gospel.

In a parallel structure, an opening set of events is mirrored by a second, parallel set in order to emphasise and reinforce the message of each event. These important event form the pair groups BCD and B'C'D' in the following list taken from the structure of Mark:

Only once as is the case with all who truly repent and are led by the Father (see John 6:44; 65) to the 'Little Flock' (see Luke 12:32).

Yet Jesus was not in need of baptism since He lived of perfect life without sinning:

John Baptizes Jesus13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?15 But Jesus answered and said to him, Permit it to be sonow, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he allowed Him.16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
