Matthew 27:50 - And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
Two things stand out in this verse: One, that Jesus cried out "with a loud voice." This wouldn't be possible for someone about to die of suffocation. Two, that Jesus "yielded up His spirit." The Greek word translated as "yielded up" is aphiemi, which primarily means "to send away" - in other words, a deliberate act.
Mark 15:44 - Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time.
Pilate's reaction to the news of Jesus' death also indicates that He wasn't on the cross long enough to have died in a manner normally consistent with crucifixion.
