No Jesus did not make a mistake in choosing the twelve disciples. He knew exactly who to chose and what their actions, good or bad would be. Jesus did not and does not make mistakes. He is the Son of the living God.
In John 17:6-19 is Jesus' prayer for His disciples. In it He thanks God the Father for giving the disciples to Him to teach and prepare them to carry on the work that the Father wanted done, to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to observe all the things that He (Jesus) commanded. Jesus did what the Father commanded and that included choosing not only James, Peter and John but the other disciples as well.
