He died so we could get rid of our sins, so yes, he loved us very much.

Answer: Yes, very much so. Before His arrest, Jesus dramatized for the disciples His impending death by sharing with them in the bread and the cup of the Passover with the explanation that the bread was His body to be broken for them, and the cup of wine was His blood to be shed for their salvation. Jesus uttered seven sayings from the cross. One of them was "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). Another, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is to say "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" Herschel Hobbs explored the meaning of this cry: "Was it not that Jesus now had drunk the last dregs of the bitter cup? He had become sin. A holy God cannot look with favor upon sin. In that moment the Son of God wrestled with sin in its deepest depths. The son of man, now become sin, endured the sufferings of hell as all the vial of God's abiding wrath was poured out upon sin. It was only for a moment, but it was the infinite God suffering infinitely for the infinite guilt of finite man." Again I say, yes, Jesus really died on the cross because he really loves us.

Mark 14:35 gives us one answer. If this is a historical record of what happened at the Garden of Gethsemene, Jesus was very reluctant to die: "And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him." This means that Jesus only died because he had no choice.

Mark 15:34 says that Jesus' last words on the cross were, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" He had prayed to God at the Garden of Gethsemene and now realised that God was not answering his prayer to be saved from crucifixion. If this is not a historical record of Jesus' last words, then there is no foundation for the gospel story of the crucifixion. But if these passages are true, Jesus had no wish to die on the cross and did not die because he loved us or to forgive our sins. He only died because the Pharisees and priests considered him a troublemaker.

What do Christians think when they see the cross?

Christians feel both joy and sadness when they see the cross. Sadness, because they know that Jesus died on the cross to remove all the sin or things we do wrong, from them so that they can have a relationship with God and have eternal life. Joy, because they know that Jesus died because he loved them soooo much and that now they can have a relationship with God and when they die, live on for eternity in the perfect place, Heaven.

Was James standing at the cross with jesus?

None of the New Testament gospels mentions James standing at the cross with Jesus. In fact, the synoptic gospels quite clearly say that none of the disciples was there. On the other hand, John's Gospel says that the "disciple whom Jesus loved" was at the foot of the cross, but does not identify this disciple. If John's Gospel is right, this could have been James, although Christian tradition says that the "disciple whom Jesus loved" was the disciple John.
