It is unlikely that Juliette Gordon Low used ASL (American Sign Language). Juliette was born with hearing. She lost part of the hearing in her right ear when she asked a doctor to try a new treatment for ear infections, silver nitrate. She lost all of the hearing in her left ear when a doctor punctured her ear drum while trying to remove a piece of rice that had become lodged in her ear on her wedding day. Juliette would use her hearing loss to her advantage when asking others to help with the Girl Scouts. She just pretended that she couldn't hear them telling her "no"!

What did Juliette Low wear to play basketball?

If Juliette Gordon Low played basketball, she probably wore an outfit similar to the outfits her Girl Scouts wore: loose blouses over pants called bloomers. Since girls at that time were not allowed to wear pants, Juliette had a special basketball court for the girls to use. Curtains were hung to hide the court!

What was Juliette Gordon Low's leadership style?

Juliette Gordon Low's leadership style was mostly Visionary. She had a vision for what she wanted for Girl Scouts of the USA, she was excited about what she wanted for the organization, and she worked hard to get people to support her vision. However, once she got people to support her vision, she would move on to another project and leave them wondering what decisions they should be making and what decisions they should refer to Juliette. As the organization grew, those she left in charge were able to convince Juliette that she should leave the day to day decisions to those she had put in charge and to allow for the creation of a governing board for the organization. This allowed Juliette to use her visionary leadership on other projects, such as creating an international Girl Guides and Girl Scout organization.
