Not quite. In Laura's original manuscript "Pioneer Girl" which was never published, but was the basis for all her other books, she relates a story of a teen-age girl and her two younger siblings who were caught out in a blizzard, and burrowed into a haystack to try and wait it out. The baby was actually the one who survived best of the three, as it was under the older girls coat. The girl survived, but had to have her feet amputated, if I recall correctly. She makes passing reference to other stories of this type, too. Unfortunately, it was all too common an occurrence on the prairie. In the Long Winter, she makes reference to children getting caught out on the prairie in blizzards and hiding in haystacks for warmth. More often than not, they did not survive.
