I am not sure that the above answer is accurate but I can't prove it. Johnson was a sneaky, back slapping, glad handing, backroom politician. For years I heard that he had family connections to Bell Helicopters. If that was true he profited each time the VC shot one down and they shot hundreds of them down.

He did not lose his job. He chose not to run in 1968. He basically quit. Kennedy was considering getting out of Viet-Nam after the 1964 pres. election. He was killed in 1963. Johnson took over as Vice then won the 1964 election by presenting himself as the peace candidate and smearing his opponet Goldwater as a war-monger. In 1965 Johnson massively expanded the Viet-Nam war after the Tokin Gulf resolution.
