The Church was split over the teachings of Luther and his fellow reformers. Those that chose the emerging and increasing authority of the bishop of Rome are today known as Roman Catholics. Those that did not, and instead chose an authority of scriptural tradition and authority, became known as Lutherans. Amongst the former, Luther was very unpopular and they tried to have him killed. To the latter, he was a pillar of doctrinal purity, a great biblical scholar and one of the fathers of the re-ordered Church which now bears his name.
That is pretty simple, Martin Luther was trying to remove Christ's duly appointed Vicar over His Church: the pope in Rome, and replace him, as the final arbiter of religious doctrine with himself!
