On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII, of happy memory, issued his Apostolic Constitution, MUNIFICENTISSIMUS DEUS DEFINING THE DOGMA OF THE ASSUMPTION. In that constitution, he carefully defined what Catholics always believed about the Blessed Virgin Mary, that, at the end of her life, she was assumed body and soul into heaven. At that time there were two schools of thought in the Church, one was called the immortalists, who believed that Our Blessed Lady fell asleep at the end of her life and was assumed into heaven. The other school was the mortalists, who believed that Our Blessed Lady, in imitation of her Son, died, and slept in death for three days, at which time her body as assumed into heaven and re-united with her soul. In Munificentissimus Deus, Pope Pius XII, with all the authority given to him as the Vicar of Christ, solemnly proclaimed that Our Lady was assumed into heaven. As to the how (mortalists vs. immmortalists) he solemnly proclaimed - nothing. Because we don't know, and it isn't important. That fact is that she ended her mortal life on earth (which the Orthodox call The Dormition (or falling asleep) and was assumed into heaven. How this happened, we will know after we die, but the important thing is that Our Lady is alive right now in heaven, body and soul, and that she cares for you and prays for you every time that you ask. We don't know if Our Blessed Lady died or just ended her life. We do know that, because of her Immaculate Conception, and the fact that she never sinned, her body never suffered corruption, and was assumed into heaven, where she reigns right now. The Blessed Virgin Mary most definitely did NOT ascend into heaven, she was not God, and was incapable of such a thing, God assumed her into heaven, there is a world of difference. Why did Mary ascend to Heaven as body and soul?

Mary did not ascend into heaven, she was taken (assumed) into heaven. Only Christ ascended under his own power. Mary was taken, body and soul, either at the end of her earthly years or within a short time after her death.

What do you mean by 'the Assumption of Mary'?

At the time of her death, or shortly thereafter, Mary's body was taken into heaven and reunited with her soul. She was 'assumed' (taken up by God) and did not ascend under her own power as did Christ. The Assumption is celebrated on August 15.

Was Mary the mother of Jesus there when Jesus asscended into heaven?

The ascension of Mary is not biblical. Nowhere in scripture does it say that Mary ascended like Jesus. This is a dogma that, over the years, has been invented by the Roman Catholic Church and has no basis in fact nor scripture. Mary's departure, body and and soul into heaven is called her "Assumption" as the Ascension is reserved for Christ, for ascension denotes the action is done by the person's own power. The exact date of the Assumption is not known, though tradition dictates that eleven of the apostles were there, St James the Greater having already been martyred in 44 AD. Catholics believe in both Scripture and Oral Tradition and thus the fact that the Assumption does not appear in the Bible is of no concern. What proponents of Sola Scriptura should consider is that omission is not denial. Christian tradition has always held the Assumption as true; even the Orthodox retain it though having split hundreds of years before it was confirmed by a doctrinal declaration of the pope. Worthy of note, especially to Protestants who point to the despicable practice of Catholics and their alleged "idol worship" regarding relics is that no church has ever claimed to have the body of Mary, something quite astonishing since Mary is the saint par excellence and certainly her mortal remains would receive great honour should they have been on earth. No church has ever made such a claim since her assumption has always been widely believed by Christians throughout the centuries and any assertion of possessing her body would have not been taken seriously. The assumption also makes sense doctrinally; since Mary was free of Original Sin, she would not be liable to the punishments of sin such as decay or death though some theologians believed she voluntarily died before her assumption to better unite herself to her Son and His sacrifice.

When was Mary mother of Jesus born and when did she die?

Mary was born about 15 years prior to Conceiving Christ. Mary didn't die. She was Assumed physically into Heaven (like the Prophet Elijah), either in Ephesus, or Jerusalem.
