Mercedes Benz and Crysler were once sister companies. However, they negotiated the sale of Crysler once Mercedes started suffering as a result of having a 50-50 ownership. It was sold to Cerberus Capital Management Group after that. In the 2008 financial crisis, Crysler ended up being sold to Fiat.

Chrysler merged with Mercedes Benz in 1998 but was sold in 2007 severing all ties with Mercedes Benz. The Italian auto company Fiat now owns majority interest in Chrysler LLC. The only relationship left is that Chrysler still buys some parts from Mercedes for the 2003-2009 Sprinter vans.
The merger was to be a merger of equals but did not actually follow this model very closely at all. The merger was accomplished by Daimler-Benz purchasing 92 percent of Chrysler in an exchange of shares. The shares were valued at $37 billion at the time.
