Several years ago I read an item that stated that Michelangelo was upset that no one knew he had done the work, so he went in at night and placed his name on her sash. I think this has a true ring to it.

It was not customary for artists at the time to sign their work. Michelangelo didn't sign his paintings.

However, he was so proud of his Pieta sculpture that he signed it. His signature is carved across the chest of the Virgin.
